<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The Magnificent Seven did such a great job with their posts, that since the initial 'Hello' there was no need for me to blog much. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">They really said it all: whether it was about the social entrepreneurs who volunteered their time to come and talk to our group, or the memorable sites we visited in and around Budapest, or the cultural, culinary, and linguistic ventures they undertook in the past five weeks - you can find it all in the notes they've written, and beautiful pics they posted throughout the program. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Reading these stories I hope that you agree we had a successful and fun summer. They took advantage of all the opportunities the program and this country provided. It might have been a bit overwhelming from time to time (which tram goes where at what time?), but that did not slow them down, and they embraced the best (meeting new people, working with talented leaders, trying local stuff: food, thermal baths, the nightlife), and did not complain about the challenges (the heat, the rain, the early mornings, the side effects of delicious, but heavy meals) - just like one would expect from a group of true Ramblin' Wrecks.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In the 7 weeks of the program we visited 12 social enterprises, heard from 19 social entrepreneurs , and together our students contributed more than 220 hours to their internships. They worked on projects and tasks that helped our partners (<a href="http://www.unitedway.hu/en/" target="_blank">United Way Hungary</a>, <a href="http://www.batortabor.hu/?id=fooldal&lang=eng" target="_blank">Courage Camps</a>, <a href="http://www.ceeweb.org/" target="_blank">CEEweb</a>, <a href="http://www.cij.hu/hu/" target="_blank">Center for Independent Journalism</a>, XKK Media, and <a href="http://hand.org.hu/en/about_us" target="_blank">HAND</a>) better serve their mission, and in the process they learned about the challenges and opportunities the social sector is facing, and the importance of sustainability, creativity, ethics, and leadership in delivering innovative solutions to the world's most pressing social issues.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So all that is left is to thank the wonderful people and organizations (mentioned throughout our blog pages) for being part of our journey - in Atlanta and in Hungary. My colleague, Bob Thomas and I are deeply grateful for their invaluable support and contributions to our students' understanding of the global challenges that require their leadership and for providing an inspiring example for them to follow.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">We are looking forward to continuing the relationship and this journey next summer.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Viszontlátásra!</span><br />

guys! This is Roshni again. Here's a little about the organization I
worked with in Hungary.</span></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">My
internship with HAND started late June 2012. </span></span>

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">HAND
is officially known as Hungarian Association of NGOs for development
and Humanitarian Aid</span></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">It
helps organizations in the nonprofit sector by providing management
services such as training, research visits and and contacting donors.
It also acts as a mediator for easier flow of information between the
NGOs and the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. </span></span>

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">During
this time, I met a lot of awesome people. Timea Gideon, my manager
helped me understand how the organization operates and what it's main
functions were. I also met the President of HAND, Mr. Laszlo<b> </b>who
was very passionate about the organization and it's work.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">On

assignment, their Newsletter. It was fun compiling and summarizing
news about various policies and government regulations in Hungary
related to nonprofit organizations. </span></span>

<br /></div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">It
was also challenging at times since I didn't understand Hungarian.
Some websites I had to research on were completely in Hungarian, so
Google translator was of great help. I was happy to work with Kati
who was also interning with HAND..... even though it was only through
emails :) She fixed the Hungarian part of the newsletter and I sent
her all my work in English. She also worked around my overwhelming travel schedule, I would like to say thank you Kati!</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">With
the little time I was involved with HAND and my stay in Budapest, I'm

Hey there! It's me Tanay here again!<br />
So let me tell you guys about my internship. Over the summer in Budapest I worked with CEEweb (Central and Eastern European Working Group for the Enhancement of Biodiversity). I think I was assigned CEEweb due to my interests in environmental conservation, and due to some of my past experiences in this field. It was a great experience working with CEEweb.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnB1I-ReTjm31CcZfLQQ4rmr4f34nnGJlhxViLYN6BU6Wm6d8891pivS6zSCgD-VrTtJVeFYGzwwXts-isbB38orSWpMgBxutwRZ110IMmaxhCs2rqPiB51zQLJmMZ2GtEd0RRCNyCPrZx/s1600/ceeweb_logo.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhnB1I-ReTjm31CcZfLQQ4rmr4f34nnGJlhxViLYN6BU6Wm6d8891pivS6zSCgD-VrTtJVeFYGzwwXts-isbB38orSWpMgBxutwRZ110IMmaxhCs2rqPiB51zQLJmMZ2GtEd0RRCNyCPrZx/s1600/ceeweb_logo.png" /></a>Some of the main things that I worked on included- Reading articles on and learning about green infrastructure, environmental policies in the EU, landscape fragmentation and land use in Europe.<br />
Then I got involved with the Green-Go fest- and annual festival organized by CEEweb for promotion of biodiversity conservation. I created posters for a short film contest (within the Green-Go Fest) in English and also in Hungarian. I created and proposed a new project management chart to CEEweb. The chart would help them solve managerial issues related to long term projects. It would help the organization track the progress of each task related to every project. Based on what we learned in class and from other speakers, I even presented some marketing tips to CEEweb.<br />
While working there was also a lot to learn from my internship. I learned about how working in Europe differs from working in the United States- especially when you communicate with people who speak another language. I also learned a lot about the environmental policies in Europe and about how NGOs are making efforts to reduce the carbon footprint. I thoroughly enjoyed working at CEEweb and only wished that I could work with them for a longer period.<br />
<br />
The last month has been extremely enjoyable and productive at the same time. Being called the "official photographer" of the program was a great honor. Every day was just amazing. I am glad I spent a month in Budapest, and I am sure I would definitely return to this city at some point in the future.<br />

<span style="color: blue; font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">Working
with Bátor Tábor was definitely a wonderful experience. Over
the course of this program, one concept that I have constantly
been reminded of is the importance of strategy. The interesting thing
is, I got the opportunity to witness how this organization's
multiple operations come together to execute their strategy. I
personally got to experience the difficulties these
organizations face when researching financial resources.I admire the
hard work and dedication that these organizations have to support
their social causes.</span></div>

<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Working for XKK - as I'm sure was the case for all the program's students - was a unique experience because I got the chance to learn about Hungary through problem solving and interaction, rather than through secondary sources. Figuring out what practices could and should be applied in Hungarian society has been an ongoing lesson, but certainly an informative one! My contact at XKK was very helpful in teaching me which solutions could work and which were not relevant here, as well as helping me gain a deeper understanding of the problems they are trying to address. </div>
<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
My tasks started out as one list and over the course of the program, morphed into something completely different. In the end, my responsibilities were primarily to come up with ideas for an anti-prejudice campaign, to research successful parent network models, to create a database of NGOs with relevant causes or potential funding interest, and to identify what factors make an anti-prejudice effort successful. </div>
<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #351c75; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Interning in Hungary was a very valuable experience and I highly recommend it to anyone considering the program! It has been an excellent, hands-on way to learn about the region's culture, politics, NGO sector, and business environment. </div>

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
Hello everyone,</div>
<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
My name is Roshni Sharma.
Like most students in the Budapest Study Abroad Program, I'm also a
Management major concentrating in Human Resources. I love to see new
places, get to know different people and capture moments in my
pictures. This passion of mine brought me to join this program
foremost. Apart from that, my interest in Social Entrepreneurship
grew as a soon-to-graduate student hoping to step foot in the
business world and make changes for the causes that I believe in. I'm
really glad I got on board with the rest of the crew in this program
because of the encouragement it has given me and the optimism I have
discovered while on this journey.

<div align="JUSTIFY" style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
It seems like just
yesterday we arrived at Carolina ut 10, Budapest (our apartment). I
remember the excitement when we first crossed the bridge and saw the
most breathtaking view of the city parted by the Danube. Four weeks
down the road now, I can't believe the programs ends this week and we
are all wrapping things to take home or to travel more :) With this
amazing experience and a whole lot of incredible memories to take
further, I would like to share some of highlights of the end week in
Budapest and my personal experiences.</div>

At 8:30 AM we all hurried
our way to the main door of our apartment to catch the tram to the

catching a glimpse of this magnificent work of art. <span style="color: black;"><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">It
is one of the most outstanding landmark I have ever seen, sort of
like the ones in Disney movies. </span></span>

examples of a leader he talked about during the presentation was his

society is changing, so are the definitions of entrepreneurs.

showed us a video of some of the kids in the campaign who have been
fighting against their illness for a long time. It is amazing to see
the positivity in those kids and the fact that they do not let their
limitations come in the way of their everyday lives. One of the kids
said that their disability was a reality they needed to accept;
something they cannot change but what they can do is focus on things
they could do. This was a very inspirational and an equally emotional
presentation. I liked the optimism Mr. <span style="color: black;">Molnár</span>

seems to have a great balance of the two sectors. </span>

Study Abroad has been a great learning experience. I cannot believe
it is the last week of our program. I have met some of the most
inspirational people during this trip and their words will resonate
with me. To make it even more memorable, our group of 7 students is
by far the most diverse creatures I have come across and that
definitely added more fun to our after class adventures. Other than
that,<span style="color: black;"> </span><span style="color: black;">I’ve
gotten to see a lot of Europe, however there is so much more to see
and I consider it as a motivation to come back soon! Also, to anyone
wondering about the potential for European exploration while you’re
studying abroad, I would like to tell you that it is quite simple and
well worth it.</span></span></span></div>

The Center for Independent Journalism of Hungary was founded in
1995 and for the first few years focused on basic journalism training. Today it is a non-political organization
whose mission is to raise professional standards in journalism and contribute
to ethical, unbiased reporting in Hungary.
Essentially they act as a catalyst organizing and holding conferences,
round table discussions, workshops, trainings for journalists, promoting the
latest reporting technologies, and bringing in scholars to speak to the journalistic community. Besides this, they also promote Roma
journalist programs focused on training and reporting Roma stories. <o:p></o:p></div>

Our group visited <span class="apple-converted-space"> one of </span>Budapest's finest
jails, Fegyház<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>és Börtön for a little more perspective on the Hungarian
system of justice. Even though not
technically classified as a social enterprise, the jail visit delved into some
of the questions we are primarily addressing by studying this subject
area. How does one provide maximum
social good while being efficient? What
about sustainability? How do logistics
operate in an organization where the mission in not necessarily the main
operation? Who are really the
stakeholders in this situation? <br />
<br />
All very important questions. <br />
<br />
Besides this, our tour guide/ translator, Willy Benkő, volunteers his time at the jail. He teaches inmates who are to be released in
less than one year public speaking skills.
First involved with Toastmasters in the states, Will's passion is public
speaking, and he truly believes it is an invaluable skill in this day and age
that can be easily attained through direction and practice. Self-confidence is what rehabilated men
really need to be good and do in the world, and Bill strongly holds that
teaching this skills can help provide that.
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Today the jail holds about 1,500 inmates with 600 workers to
run the place. After a thorough security
check, we were lead into the cell block to have a look at the inmate's quarters
(which come in smoking and non-smoking for future reference and can sleep 2-8
depending on how cozy one wants to get).
With inmates in their very stylish grey on grey attire doing work in the
garden, we learned about the 3 tier system of classification and that everyone
gets to go outside a minimum of an hour a day.
Oh, and we also learned of the rubber room where inmates with anger
issues can take their frustration out.
Or try to set it on fire as one, naked, man allegedly did. <br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After this, we stopped for lunch right off of Moritz Square
on the Buda side where we were regaled with tales of how one can roast large
sections of bacon fat over a bon fire and make a delicious topping for bread
that way. My personal agenda for next
week involves asking our landlord of any inhibitions he might have about a
group bon fire in the open space beside our apartments.</div>

Hungary. We also learned a great deal about a
government that we are not sure how specifically they got into office because
we cannot find anyone who actually supports them. These days the non-profit sector in Hungary
is having great difficulty. Between a
decrease in income and increase in obstacles thanks to the current government's
policies, social benefit organizations are struggling here. Plus it is hard to work with a government
that is so bias that once the state-run media had to apologize for having
'technical difficulties' that resulted in them not being able to find about
50,000 protestors right next to where they were filming something about the
Prime Minister. Probably, their technician was just off
getting some polinka or something. </div>

Our group met with the Carpathian Foundation located in Eger. Operating in Hungary, Poland, Slovakia,
Romania, and the Ukraine- but only certain regions of each- the cross-border,
regional foundation founded in 1995 acts as a 're-granter' of funds received
from such places as the Norwegian Fund back to local non-profits. While also providing financial and technical
assistance to local organizations, the Carpathian Foundation itself runs Roma
training programs and scholarship programs.
Operating in a region of growing disparity and large minority
populations, their aim is to improve the quality of life in that area through
fostering local initiatives. Three of

<span style="color: blue; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><b>LaCourtney's here!</b> </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Well let me first say, This has been such an amazing journey and experience thus far. I'm so happy that we are able share these with you.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I'm a Senior studying Business Administration with an anticipated graduation date of May 2013. With that being said, time is winding down fast. Which brings me to one of the reasons of why I chose this program. There are so many amazing opportunities available to us, and I only had scratched the surface. The chances of me having an opportunity like this again are slim. So...<b>Y.O.L.O</b>! My main interest in this stemmed from social issues related to education, children's health, and lack of opportunities for mentally handicapped individuals. Wanting to start my own social enterprise one day, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity learn how these enterprises operate with an international perspective. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This past Tuesday we got the opportunity to hear a lecture from <b>Eva Kuti</b>. If you want to know anything about Hungary's NGO sector, Eva is the person to talk to. Eva worked for the Central Statistical Office and the Economic Research Institute where her research focused on the non profit sector of Hungary. The knowledge she provided us with gave us a deeper understanding of what environment these organizations operate in. We are truly grateful to have received her views and insights. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Times, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Wednesday I spent my first day interning for <b>Bator Tabor</b>. Bator Tabor offers complex therapeutic recreation programs for children with cancer, diabetes, JRA or hemophilia and their families. I've enjoyed it so far. Charity Bank, UK based, <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="line-height: 19px;">finances social enterprises, charities and community organizations. Charity Bank acts as any other bank except that their depositors and investors use their money to facilitate real social change. Charity Bank also tells you exactly what they do with your money. They give their savers the option to take trips to see projects that are using their money. This brings the savers together in the hope of sparking up new ideas to make social change in communities of their own. I just think this is an amazing concept! Charity Bank believes it can make the biggest impact by staying small. I believe that statement raises an important point. You can make the greatest impact by focusing all of your energy into one community than allocating it out to ten. BUT...of course every organization's mission is different and decisions should be made accordingly. We were able to enjoy lunch with Malcolm afterwards. It was a pleasure to have him take the time out to speak and have lunch with us. </span></span></span><br />

Today the group visited<a href="http://www.unitedway.hu/en/"> United Way Hungary</a> where I am doing my internship. We heard about UWH from Tamas Füzesy the current CEO about their mission, goals, programs, and fundraising.<br />
<br />
The <b>mission</b> of UWH is specific to one area of the United Way Worldwide causes of income, homelessness, education, and health. In Hungary they are focused on providing <b>education</b> to children, teachers, and parents to <b>prevent</b> injuries in children ages 5-12. The video below tells more about this mission.<br />
<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/s50nuHPCrug?rel=0" width="560"></iframe><br />
<br />
In the coming years UWH hopes to expand their program in order to reach more students and achieve a measurable community impact. Their <b>goals </b>include:<br />
<ul>
<li>Expanding the Safety School program countrywide</li>
<li>Making the program a part of the national curriculum</li>
<li>Building and operating a volunteer teacher network </li>
<li>Strengthening and coordinating the cooperation with organizations working in the child injury prevention field</li>
<li>Developing reliable injury statistics and measurement procedures with partner organizations</li>
</ul>
<div>
Unlike the traditional United Way model, UWH does not rely on payroll giving or workplace campaigns for fundraising. They are in the process of building <b>trust </b>within the community so that people feel comfortable giving to them. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In the next few weeks I will post more about United Way Hungary as Kayla and I get deeper into our internship work. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com01113 Budapest, Karolina Way 6-24, Hungary47.48102349 19.0307523625.515763489999998 -21.39893514 69.44628349 59.46043986tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4028288341880306195.post-55007597099637623432012-06-03T13:44:00.002-07:002012-06-06T12:05:15.343-07:00Szeged Weekend Trip<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Szia! My name is Nicole Reardon, I am a Management student graduating in December (AH!) and this is my first trip to Eastern Europe. I took Social Entrepreneurship with Dori and Servant Leadership with Bob last semester and they inspired me to come on the Budapest study abroad program.<br />

<br />
This weekend we made the two hour drive to Szeged where we stayed in a hotel overnight and explored the town during the day. We had many Hungarian traditional foods, saw the city sites, visited the paprika and salami museum, and went to a ethnographic museum where we saw the Hungarian cyclorama painting.<br />

Szia! My name is Hannah and I’m a rising senior BSBA major. I
had always been interested in social enterprise, but until recently, didn’t
realize the concept had a name! I decided to join the Budapest program to learn
more and to experience Hungary. Since I arrived, we have visited the House of

about the European Union and about Hungarian history. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
Eszter’s lecture provided a lot of the necessary background for understanding the framework of Hungary's SE and non-profit community. Eszter
introduced the EU’s founding goals as well as the basic conditions for EU membership,
which are: a working democracy, rule of law, a market economy, and respect for
human and minority rights. We learned about the different treaties allowing
the EU to become a legal personality, the bureaucratic process to be
internationally fair and accessible, and structural changes such that additional
countries could join. There is also a punishment system for non-compliance with
EU policies, although there is a limit its enforcement. One thing I found
interesting was the standardization of products across the EU, for example,
specifying what makes something chocolate or a cucumber. This was done
to protect the markets for such goods by preventing entry of international alternatives.
Finally, Eszter talked about the media and the problems faced by organizations
trying to express multiple sides of an issue. The current government is facing
heavy criticism from the EU community for its restrictions on free speech and
free press, which is one of the focuses of my internship. </div>

history: no such thing. Andras very succinctly explained the incredibly rich
history of the Hungarian land, people, and politics over the last two thousand
years. They were originally a small but resilient nomadic people with origins
and influences from most of the neighboring regions. The origin of the Magyar language is as complex as their anthropology. Politically,
Hungary underwent several very dramatic periods of change in occupation and
government style. The political timeline goes roughly as follows: early
monarchies, Mongol and Ottoman invasion, Austria-Hungary and Habsburg rule,
WWI, separation from Austria and revolution, early communism, WWII, German Nazi
then Soviet communist invasion, 1956 revolution, Kadar and reforms, new market
economy, end of communism and Soviet retreat, and modern Hungary. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
The House of Terror is located in the former secret police
headquarters from the communist rule. The top floors served as the bureaucratic nexus, while the basement was reserved for interrogation and execution of suspected dissidents.
Upon entering, visitors are faced with a dauntingly large wall covered with the faces of the regime's victims. Some were killed for rallying the opposition to the one-party
system, others for expressing discontent with the way things were. The museum
showed the oppression of the Hungarian people by both Nazi Germany and Soviet
Russia, and through the various reconstructed rooms of the former headquarters, gave
us a sense of the intense fear and hardship the Hungarians faced
throughout these periods. </div>

Today we traveled to Etyek, a rural white wine region, to
hear from Marta Marczis about the foundation she runs with her husband. Her
organization serves not only to find solutions to problems faced by the rural
poor (and particularly the Roma community), but also to connect the local level on which a development issue is experienced and the
regional/EU level on which the problem is addressed. She talked a lot about the
problems with the overwhelming bureaucracy that organizations in seeking
development funds, requiring “kilos of paper” each time a grant proposal is
created. One interesting project she told us about was a football (soccer)
organization that a local community organized. The football team they formed
gave members a sense of pride and provided a springboard
for learning how to organize themselves and involve their community. From a single team, they grew to an after-school program, then to a regional tournament
organizer, and now to a foundation for “football and development” with
information centers for satisfying basic social integration needs like internet
access and obtaining legal documents… and a lot of football, of course. </div>

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> <br />
Hello! My name is Tanay Rajore. I am a sophomore, pursuing Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. I was born and brought up in India. I love traveling and have always been interested in visiting different countries around the world. I opted for the Budapest Study Abroad Program since I hadn't been to Eastern Europe before and I thought that Budapest would be a great city to visit and explore over the summer. Besides, I was really interested in all the courses offered by this program, even though they are not directly related to my major.<br />
All of us have finally arrived in Budapest, Hungary and I must say, this city is fantastic! I am so glad I chose Budapest as my study abroad destination. Before we arrived in Budapest, we completed our first two weeks of classes in Atlanta itself. Let me speak about two of our site visits in Atlanta. One of them was to the office of <i>Habitat for Humanity </i>, and the other was to the <i>Center for Disease Control and Prevention</i> (CDC).<br />
<br />
<b><i>Habitat for Humanity</i>:</b><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Habitat for Humanity is a social non-profit organization
that primarily helps society by building simple, affordable homes for the poor
and needy. We visited Habitat for Humanity in Atlanta on Tuesday, May 22 2012.
On entering the lobby area, we were warmly greeted by Mr. Mike Carscaddon-
Executive Vice President, International Field Operations. Mike guided us into a
conference room, where he presented to us some information about Habitat for
Humanity. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When we entered the office area, I was amazed to see the
professional setting of the organization. During the presentation, I realized that Habitat
for Humanity is a diverse, global organization with active projects in developing
countries and also some areas in the United States. People of all races, genders and
creeds are served by Habitat for Humanity. Mike told us that the houses are
built for local communities in the respective countries by volunteers and by
the locals themselves. There are no labor costs involved and the houses are
sold to local communities at the lowest base price, which is much lower than
the market price of the houses. This was the most intriguing topic of our conversation. Mike gave special emphasis on the projects
in Haiti and also mentioned the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work
Project, which focused on supporting the Gulf Coast community after hurricanes
Katrina and Rita hit the region. We also learned
that Habitat for Humanity is a diverse group with people from different
cultures and political views working together for societal betterment. About
80-90% of the money received from building the houses is invested in other
projects.<br />
It was really inspiring to know that although he had an MBA
and a secure job in the banking sector, he chose to work for a non-profit
organization, for the betterment of society. On the whole, the visit to Habitat for Humanity was extremely
useful and was a great learning experience about a social organization in the real world. I am now looking forward to visiting many more social organizations in Hungary.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><i>Center for Disease Control and Prevention</i> (CDC):</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The CDC is a federal agency that works to protect and improve the
health of the people in the United States. We visited the CDC on Wednesday, <span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">23rd May 2012. </span>To start off, the CDC is a high security zone. We spent about 20 minutes just on getting security clearance.After this lengthy security process, we finally entered the
main building, where we met Ms. Sandra Alexander, Expert consultant, Division
of Violence Prevention, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control
(NCIPC). Sandra took us into a conference room, where we met some other
professionals who belonged to the CDC. We also met a gentleman named Chris, who worked closely with the CDC as a consultant and helped
them in their research work.<br />
Sandra
was a part of the division of violence prevention and our conversation mainly
focused on child maltreatment. She told us that apart from just
assisting the victims, the main focus of the CDC is to prevent child
maltreatment from happening altogether. An interesting fact that we learned was that the CDC’s main role is to plan programs
for health promotion and to provide funding to organizations who run these
programs. They also provide funding for more research on these programs and on
other health related activities.The CDC’s programs mainly focus on Safe, Stable and
Nurturing Relationships (SSNR). Research shows that SSNR is good not only for a child’s
brain development, but also for his social development.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Next, Chris spoke to us mainly about Adverse
Childhood Experiences (ACEs). He explained that over 60% of the
people in the US have had at least one ACE, and that the healthcare costs on
ACEs in the US are estimated to be at around $418 billion annually. He also
presented some interesting correlations- for example, higher the number of ACEs experienced
by a person, the more likely he is to commit suicide. The numbers and facts presented by Chris made me realize that ACEs really have a great impact on society. Considering
that the numbers were only from the US, we can imagine what an adverse effect
this condition must be having on countries where departments like the CDC are
not set up.<br />
On the whole, I was
thoroughly impressed with the way the CDC worked. The visit to the CDC was
really informative and I am glad I got the opportunity to visit such an
important federal agency.</div>

(The chief blogger is a little behind, and she apologizes for serving you week-old information. All this will change once the students arrive to Budapest, get settled, and get to blogging)<br />
<br />
During the first week of the 2012 program we visited two small, but very efficient and high-impact organizations: The Burundi Women's Farm in Avondale, part of the <a href="http://www.globalgrowers.net/" target="_blank">Global Growers Network</a> (GGN), and Recycletronics, a <a href="http://nobisworks.org/" target="_blank">Tommy Nobis Center</a> project.<br />
<br />
At the <i>Umurima Wa Burundi </i>Robin, project manager for GGN, gave us a tour of the neatly kept garden, where plants are rotated often under the expert leadership of the refugee women who work here. The manage the farm on their own. They work here to be more independent - as they come from a male dominated culture, where traditionally the husband are sole income generators. The garden also gives them the much needed feeling of familiarity with a pastoral setting that all of them belonged to before having to flee their homes, and then arrive to a foreign country that while it gave them all the wonderful opportunities to start over and be safe, it did not look and feel like anything they were used to back home. The fact that these women brought seeds of their staple plants with them all the way from Burundi, when they were allowed to grab only so few things at the time of immigration, goes to show the importance of being connected to the earth, to farming, as the only lifestyle they knew.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSQGjROhWeuQLMP3uHAXEK_HHNCliV9qb0zddSVr6jLxiu7YR3lDpjYjMXKRoFHRRcB32mpO0S2UyoNFQPL3FAMEPF80gw41q2qIceUyiPvnReErOYzsS9TQ1M8xNQmYO6laBfCXgCXg8/s1600/BurundiFarm2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="272" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSQGjROhWeuQLMP3uHAXEK_HHNCliV9qb0zddSVr6jLxiu7YR3lDpjYjMXKRoFHRRcB32mpO0S2UyoNFQPL3FAMEPF80gw41q2qIceUyiPvnReErOYzsS9TQ1M8xNQmYO6laBfCXgCXg8/s320/BurundiFarm2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
The GGN site gives back that connection to nature that these women lost with so many other things when they became refugees, and by doing so it restores their dignity, supports their quest for independence, and helps them transition to a culture very different from theirs.<br />
<br />
<br />
Next we visited the organization that was named after Atlanta Falcons All Pro Linebacker and long time humanitarian, Tommy Nobis, who is still very involved with the board and participates in all the family activities of the Center that he gave his name to 35 years ago.<br />
Recycletronics is the flagship employment creation program at Tommy Nobis Works, and it operates as a for profit entity that uses it's profits to support the work and programs of the foundations. Their mission is to provide jobs to the most disadvantaged groups, those with disabilities, those with criminal records and other similar groups.<br />
<br />
The plant in itself is fascinating - seeing a TV, or an industrial sized printer, being taken into pieces and then shredded into small bits is a treat even for the less technologically inclined (yours truly). We learned some very interesting facts about the shortcomings of product design, from Joe Burum, our very cool guide at Recycletronics, and found out that keeping impact measurement simple is the preferred alternative to more sophisticated metrics that would be costly to develop and to implement.<br />

Dear Friends of the Georgia Tech Study Abroad Program: Leadership and Social Innovation,<br />
<br />
New summer - new blog (mainly because I can't figure out how to move the old blog to the cool new site with templates I do want to use). Good thing my job does not depend on how tech-savvy I am (not).<br />
